Neil Patrick Harris wurde am 15.06.1973 in Albuquerque, USA, geboren, wo er auch die High-School besuchte und erfolgreich abschloss.
Seine erste Rolle in einer Filmproduktion hatte er bereits als 15-jähriger im "Claras Geheimnis", einem Drama mit Whoopi Goldberg. Diese Rolle bescherte ihm bereits seine erste Golden Globe Nominierung.
Im folgenden Jahr konnte er sich die Hauptrolle in der TV-Serie "Doogie Howser, M.D." sichern, für die er wiederum für einen Golden Globe Award nominiert wurde.
Nach vier Staffeln wurde die Serie abgesetzt und Harris war in zahlreichen Gastauftritten in TV-Serien zu sehen, bevor er 1995 in "Animal Room" zum ersten mal als Erwachsener in einem Film mitspielte.
